Causes and Conditions: How Did Things Get Like This?

Video starts about 2 minutes in.

The March Mindful Gathering was on Dependent Origination, one of the Buddha's core teachings. Michael used the metaphor of Indra's Web to explain it: everything finds its nature in relationship to everything else, rather than existing as independent objects with independent causes. Nothing that is happening in the world today happened overnight. What does it mean to really sit with that?

From there the conversation opened up into territory that felt pretty immediate. The group explored how technology, and AI in particular, represents a kind of externalization of human consciousness, tracing that thread from the Industrial Revolution forward. What does it do to attention? To young people? And what counters it? The group landed on something simple: physical engagement, arts, crafts, sensory experience, training attention by actually being with the world. Bill mentioned Cal Newport's work on deep work and digital minimalism. The conversation ended with reflections on karma and personal responsibility, and how dependent origination is not just a teaching about how things got this way, but about what we are helping create right now.
